LOG BOAT
Social Media & Analytical Testing
November 2018
A 9th century log boat pulled from Llan-gors lake in the early 20th century, currently in the Brecknock Museum collection. Installed in the newly refurbished museum galleries, it was in need of cleaning before all the interpretive panels could be installed around it.

Originally treated in the early 20th century, we realized it was unlikely to have been treated with PEG, and so disassociated samples of the coating were taken for analysis at Cardiff University. The entire process shared on Twitter (link below), and further analysis will be undertaken in an attempt to identify the bulking agent used.

Treatment Pathway
Vacuum cleaned the surface
Wet cleaned the surface using water, sponges and toothebrushes
Wrapped in Tyvec for protection during ongoing construction
ATR analysis of coating
(To Be Done) SEM-EDX analysis of coating/bulking agent
